Where Culture Meets Data

At the Dubai International Food Safety Conference the co-founder of Culture Excellence Dr. Joanne Taylor presented together with Big Data expert Andrew David Bulatovic Schumer from Teletronics in Dubai about The Power of Big Data.

Obviously capturing and analysing data is an integral part of what we do at Culture Excellence. What was uniquely enlightening during the Master Class session was to hear about the challenges and opportunities facing Big Data and how these relate to our program.

”We live in a world of endless data – it is not a finite resource like coal, iron or even food – and it is growing exponentially. Infact, 90% of all the world’s data was created in the last 2 years” Andrew Schumer.

Our brains are able to process many different simultaneous streams of data. Who hasn’t checked their social media while sitting in a meeting? Also, there is data all around us – you can get data from your phone, your washing machine, your light bulb, anything and everything that connects to the internet creates data constantly. We are also incredibly interconnected in today’s world. We can know what’s happening in Fiji, as easily as what’s happening two blocks away from us. Needless to say, the opportunities for capturing and using data are endless and some companies have been extremely good at not just utilizing this but building entire business empires around Big Data. Think of Facebook and Google. Or a company like Tesla and its project of self-driving cars, which requires an enormous amount of data from cars, roads etc. for it to be viable and safe.

So with so much information out there, it is necessary to choose what information you want, how you want it and what you are going to do with it once you have it. Data can make or break a business.

As we are studying and assessing company culture, we have to be mindful of this. Culture, as mentioned in previous posts, is both visible and invisible, some of it is stable but other parts are dynamic. We are gathering information from employees directly and for that reason we need our data to be representative, comprehensive, valid and also – very importantly – honest. Put all these elements together, and it is no wonder that the Culture Excellence Assessment has taken 16+ years of research in industry and academia.
